2. How training works
- Scenario training
In Be Your Best you’ll play through scenarios recreated from professional games. You’ll play from the perspective of one player on the field. At some point you’ll be passed the ball, but until then, it’s up to you to put your awareness to the test. Scan frequently, and at the right moments, pass the awareness tests, and make the right decision once you’ve received the ball.
- Training modes
Be Your Best has two dedicated training modes which you can train with.
Training will see you progress through the rankings as you complete various scenarios. In this mode, you will play in scenarios from all different positions on the field to improve your awareness from all angles. The speed and difficulty will increase the further you progress. Score targets will also increase as you progress, meaning you will have to perform at a higher level to move on to the next division or league.
Warm up allows you to select your favoured position on the field, adjusting the game speed to suit you. Play through scenarios focussed on your position of choice and review your score at the end.
New players are recommended to start off in Training. The starting division, called Bootcamp, acts as a tutorial mode where we explain how the controls work. As you progress through Bootcamp you will unlock new scoring metrics, and eventually the awareness test.
- Scoring
In Be Your Best, you’re scored based on a number of factors. Your scan rate, timing, and number of critical scans all play a role in your score. While your performance on awareness tests, and passing decisions also have an influence. Let’s explain a bit more about each of these.
- Scanning
Scanning is when a player temporarily directs their vision away from the ball, to take in extra information. This information is meant to help their next action after receiving the ball. Top level athletes are able to look away from the ball at a higher rate than most players, and with better timing. This allows them to know more about their surroundings and make quicker and more educated decisions - leading to less frequent loss of possession and a higher pass completion accuracy.
Scan rate - Scan rate refers to how often you look away from the ball, and is measured in scans per second. Your scan rate score will depend on how often you look away from the ball during your training sessions. Looking away from the ball at a higher rate leads to a higher scan rate score.
Scan timing - Timing is everything when it comes to scanning. It is important to scan your surroundings so that you are prepared when you receive the ball, but if you scan at the wrong moments you can lose track of the ball.
So, what are the correct moments to scan?
Explained simply, you want to look at the ball when something new happens. This way you won’t lose track of it. Examples of this include, every time the ball is passed, or touched for example.
Conversely, the right time to look away from the ball (or to scan) is when the ball is not being touched. This could be when the ball is travelling after a pass, or in between touches when a player is running with the ball. Our training app will score you based on your ability to scan at the right moments.
Critical scan - If you are able to perform a scan in the brief period where a teammate plays you a pass and the ball is travelling towards you, that is called a critical scan. This is because a scan at this moment will give you the most up to date information about your surroundings, informing you if you are being pressed by an opponent or if a teammate is performing a run into space. The critical scan is an extremely difficult skill as it requires taking your eye off the ball as it’s flying towards you.
During your training you will be measured on your ability to perform critical scans.
- Awareness testing
Scanning is useless unless you remember what you saw. In Be Your Best you’ll be challenged by regular awareness tests to put your memory to the test. Several random players will be greyed out and it’s up to you to remember which team they’re on. You only have a few seconds to answer. The more you get right, the higher your awareness score will be.
- Decision making
When you finally receive the ball it’s up to you to make a particular passing or shooting decision. You’ll be scored based on how effective your decision was for your team.
- Stats hub
In the Be Your Best menu, you can view your entire training history to monitor your progress and see how you’ve improved over time. Just click on training history in the main menu and then browse through your entire record. If you are a part of a team you can view the training history of your teammates as well. You can also access this information online by logging into your Be Your Best account
- Replay tool
The replay tool allows you to review every scenario you play from all angles. Slow down the speed and move around the field as you analyse your game from above. See what you did well and where you could improve.

3. Training Best Practices
- When, how long, and how often should I train for?
Players use Be Your Best in a number of different ways, and how much you train will depend on your own personal needs, schedule and commitment levels.
To make things easier we created this framework to follow, containing a number of different types of sessions for different moments. Try to complete a minimum of 3-4 of these sessions a week to really feel the benefits in your performance.
- 5 mins “Mental Activation”
- ~Before your training & matches, as close to play time as possible. This will get you mentally sharp for when you take to the field bringing scanning behaviours top of mind.
- 10 -15 mins “Extra Session”
- ~After training & matches, challenge yourself to do a bit more to gain an edge.
- 20 - 30 mins “Development Session”
- ~On your day off, really dive into the app playing both training and warm up mode. Use the replay function to analyse your performance and find areas of improvement.
- How long before I see an improvement on the field?
The rate at which a player improves is dependent on a number of factors from your current skill level, to how much you dedicate yourself to your training. However, many players will experience an immediate impact on their performance, with scanning top of mind when they take to the field.
In a recent study with top level youth national team players, players saw a 28% average improvement in their scan rate after 9 weeks of training.
